Abstract

It has been claimed that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) can provide a more stimulating environment for children and adolescents, especially considering the ease of access to a large volume of information, personalized learning and the possibility of adapting content to individual needs. However, it is important to discuss the influences of the use of AI technologies on the development of neural functions from a very early age. Patterns of psychological development are undergoing structural changes that will undoubtedly have repercussions on the psyche of women and men in the future. Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, comes at a time when the impoverishment of psychic life through excessive use of screens has long been questioned. It is known that the brain is dependent on use. Thus, the impregnation of screens in childhood, the amplification of their use in pre-adolescence and the submersion in them in adolescence characterize digital addiction, which may disrupt the development of neural networks; undermine intelligence; compromise the development of the capacity for reflection and symbolic thinking; impair interactive and social conduct; and damage health, promoting sleep disorders and obesity. According to Jung, technology itself is neutral: whether or not there is damage to the human psyche would therefore depend on its use. The brain coupled with AI will amplify human development. Will, in the same way, the change in the structuring of neural networks lead to changes in cognition, affect, emotion and human ethics?
