Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The contribution is original and unpublished and is not being evaluated for publication by another journal.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Authors Guidelines, on the page About the Journal.

  • In case of submission to one of the peer reviewed sections (Original Research Article, Review Article, Reflection Article, Case Study), the instructions available in Ensuring blind evaluation by pairs were followed. 

  • The cover sheet and the Copyright Transfer and Authors Responsibility Agreement, signed by all authors of the article, were forwarded as supplementary documents.

  • The title and abstract are presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
  • URLs and DOIs for references were informed when possible.
  • The descriptors are valid terms, taken from: Terminologia em Psicologia (http://newpsi.bvs-psi.org.br/cgi-bin/wxis1660.exe/iah/?IsisScript=iah/iah.xis&lang=P&base=TERMINOLOGIA)

Author Guidelines

SUBMISSION 

Authors interested in submitting their contributions to the Self journal should carefully read and agree to the Editorial Policy and Guidelines for Authors.

Self accepts submissions of manuscripts in Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French.

DOCUMENTATION 

In addition to the manuscript, the author (s) must submit the following documents:

1 Cover sheet:

          COVER SHEET (example)

          • Title of the manuscript in the four publication languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish and French);

          • Authors' names (no degree, in full [deletions are possible]);

          • Affiliation: information on city, state and country;

          • Presentation of the authors: mini-curriculum, with a maximum of 70 words;

          • Author for correspondence and email address;

          • Declaration of conflicts of interest (see Editorial Policy, item Conflicts of interest);

          • Funding sources (see Editorial Policy, item Funding sources);

          • Information on specific cases: papers presented at an event or derived from theses or dissertations.

I. TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS ACCEPTED FOR PUBLICATION

1 Original research article: Presentation of unpublished data and/or scientific evidence, resulting from original scientific research on topics of interest to the field of Analytical Psychology and obtained through different methodologies, such as: clinical trials, cohort studies and experimental models of single case.

Manuscripts submitted to this section undergo a double-blind peer review process.

Structure: (a) Introduction: presents the research objective and the background in which it was developed; (b) Development: presents the methodology used, profile of participants, procedures, tools, etc.; (c) Results; (d) Discussion, Conclusion or Final Considerations; and (e) References.

Manuscripts should have a maximum of 6,000 words, including images' captions, tables, footnotes, acknowledgments and other elements (see Item Elective elements in STRUCTURE OF MANUSCRIPTS).

2 Literature review article: Critical and updated evaluations of already published scientific articles related to a particular topic of interest to the field of Analytical Psychology.

Manuscripts submitted to this section undergo a double-blind peer review process.

Structure: (a) Introduction; and (b) References.

Manuscripts should have a maximum of 6,000 words, including images' captions, tables, footnotes, acknowledgments and other elements (see Item Elective elements in STRUCTURE OF MANUSCRIPTS).

3 Reflection article (essay): It presents a conceptual and theoretical approach on topics of interest to the field of Analytical Psychology. The discussion must be based on theoretical and scientific references.

Manuscripts submitted to this section undergo a double-blind peer review process.

Structure: (a) Introduction; and (b) References.

Manuscripts should have a maximum of 6,000 words, including images' captions, tables, footnotes, acknowledgments and other elements (see Item Elective elements in STRUCTURE OF MANUSCRIPTS).

4 Case study: Analyses of a specific case of interest to the field of Analytical Psychology.

Structure: (a) Introduction; (A) Report and Discussion; and (c) References.

Manuscripts submitted to this section undergo a double-blind peer review process.

Manuscripts should have a maximum of 6,000 words, including images’ captions, tables, footnotes, acknowledgments and other elements (see Item Elective elements in STRUCTURE OF MANUSCRIPTS).

5 Review: critical reviews of books, films, plays, with no more than 2,000 words (see item II. STRUCTURE OF MANUSCRIPTS).

6 Letter to the editor: short text discussing studies published by Self, with a maximum of 1,000 words (see item II. STRUCTURE OF MANUSCRIPTS).

7 Scientific dissemination article: article of invited authors, addressing topics of interest to the analytical psychology that presents undeniable scientific quality, published in high reconaissance journal. The text is subject to a translation. It is essential that the original source is quoted and / or consulted, in accordance with journal's copyright police.

II. STRUCTURE OF MANUSCRIPTS

1 Required elements

The Self journal requires all submitted manuscripts to mandatorily contain the following elements:

(a) title of the manuscript in the four publication languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish and French);

(b) authors' names (no degree, in full [deletions are possible]);

(c) affiliation: information on city, state and country;

(d) author for correspondence and email address.

1.2 Abstract in Portuguese, English and Spanish and French: should be between 150 and 250 words and present objective of the study, methodology, results and conclusions, in a single paragraph with no subdivisions.

1.3 Keywords (controlled vocabulary) in Portuguese, English and Spanish: three (3) to six (6) keywords, separated by commas and in lower case (except in case of names) should be submitted. The use of valid terms, taken from the Terminology in Psychology (http://newpsi.bvs-psi.org.br/cgi-bin/wxis1660.exe/iah/?IsisScript=iah/iah.xis&lang=P&base=TERMINOLOGIA), or from the Terminology in Health Sciences - DeCS (http://decs.bvs.br/) is mandatory.

1.4 References: every citation, direct or indirect, should necessarily be presented in the reference list.

III. FORMATTING

1 Text

The text should be provided in digital files compatible with "Microsoft Word" program (in DOC, DOCX or RTF format), according to the APA recommendations (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/).

Tables

Tables should be included by sequential numbers as they appear in the text, using Arabic numbers. They should contain title and explanatory note (if necessary).

3 Figures

Tables should be included by sequential numbers as they appear in the text, using Arabic numbers. They should contain title and explanatory note (if necessary).

Moreover, the figures should be sent separately, with minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

Types of figures: (a) photographs, radiographs, micrographs (TIFF format); (b) charts and diagrams (PDF format); and (c) drawings and illustrations (PDF format).

4 Videos

Video files may be submitted, respecting other specifics, including the anonymity of the authors (for evaluation purposes), and respecting the rights of patients.

5 Footnotes in the main text

They should be indicated by asterisks and restricted to a minimum.

6 Spelling of scientific terms

Scientific names should be written in full, as well as the names of compounds and chemicals, when first mentioned in the main text.

7 Units of measurement

They should be submitted in accordance with the International System of Units (http://www.bipm.org or www.inmetro.gov.br/consumidor/unidLegaisMed.asp).

Authors are responsible for informing all mandatory elements of references.

9 Citations

Citations follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text.

9.1 Direct quotations fewer than 40 words

It is the exact reproduction, word for word, keeping the original spelling and internal punctuation, of a text. The quotation should be enclosed within double quotation marks and indicate the author(s) and the page number of the quoted text.

               According to Maier (2016), "Bion's concept of the container in itself appears to be the result of growth in the container-contained mode. Finally the author deals with the question whether cryptomnesia in psychoanalytical literature can frequently be seen as the result of psychic growth" (p. 1).

Or

              According to the author, "Bion's concept of the container in itself appears to be the result of growth in the container-contained mode.  9.2 Direct quotation longer than 40 words

Direct quotations longer than 40 words should be placed in a free-standing justified paragraph, with no quotation marks and indented 1/2 inch from the left margin (the entire quotation should be typed 1/2 inch from the left margin). 

Maier (2016) says

Note: Use an ellipsis inside brackets ([...]) to indicate that some material has been omitted from the original text.

9.3 Indirect quotation

It is a paraphrase of the text of a cited author, without losing its original meaning.

From this, as stated by Lévy (1999), cyberspace is an enabler of democracy.

9.4 Citing a citation

It is the direct or indirect quotation of a text being cited in a secondary source.

9.5 Citation of Unknown Author

Cite title, year and page.

List all the authors. Commas separate authors’ names, while the last author’s name is preceded by &.

Exceptionally, for the Collected Works of C. G. Jung, include both the page number and the collection and volume in Roman numerals. In case the volume is divided –which may occur in some collections‒, include a slash

and then, in Arabic numerals (1,2,...), the number of the paragraph ‒ (p. 170; OC IX/2: 280) or (p. 170; CW 9/2: 280).
