Affections always received special attention in the work of Carl Gustav Jung. Since his research of word association studies, which gave origin to the theory of complexes, Jung upheld the importance of affections in the constitution of the psyche, especially in the unconscious manifestations. In the same way, Jaak Panksepp, the father of affective neuroscience demonstrated the importance of primary emotional systems in the organization of the human being personality and affirmed that the success of therapeutic processes depends on the stimulation of these very same systems. The objective of this paper is to draw a parallel between the importance of affections within the Jungian approach and the affections theory of the neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp. The work of both, Jung and Panksepp gave rise to the theories of personality. The personality test knows as Myers-Brigs Type Indicator – MBTI is based on analytic psychology, while the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scale – ANPS was based on affective neuroscience. Both scales have dimensions that may be correlated. Besides, the psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist observed the relationship of symbolic/metaphoric language with subcortical emotional systems of the brain and with the brain right hemisphere. McGilchrist also observed that this type of language is more effective to activate the brain emotional centers than denotative language. These convergences between analytic psychology and neuroscience are evidence that the symbolic material can provide beneficial affective stimuli for personality development, and also of positively influence affectivity in therapeutic processes.
